about

TRAIN GOING NOWHERE is my only album largely recorded in professional studios: 24-track analogue at Valley Center, and 8-track digital at J-Lab. The few tracks recorded at home were also mastered at the studios.

My very first CD release, THE SIMPLE CHANCE OF LIFE, had come out shortly before the birth of my son Friday; as a result, most copies of that album wound up under my bed. However, in this same time period my Grandmother died and left me $5000, which became my budget for recording at Valley Center Studios, where I had tracked the drums for SIMPLE CHANCE. Knowing that raising our first child would take an inordinate amount of time and effort, I purposely crafted a stripped-down Rock album with lots of guests.

However, midway through the sessions, with 24-track masters only half finished, my wife suddenly balked about handing over the completion money. At one point I considered burning the tapes as a kind of Art Protest, but instead recorded what I could at home, and even sold off most of my record and CD collection to scrape up studio time. When this “stripped down Rock album” was finally mastered (a spectacular job by Judson Leach) it had been nearly six years since SIMPLE CHANCE.

As I mentioned, there are MANY guests on this album. Returning from SIMPLE CHANCE is Kye (Kevin) Fowler singing lead on The Grid and Pablo and Tracy’s Acid Party. Chris Assells and new player Mike Reagan jammed along to The Grid. Jay Richardson again provided classy Sax fills here and there. Don Campau and Robin Obrien sing backup on Twilight Games. Alan Rankin returns for a blazing solo on Train Going Nowhere. Even my wife Julie is caught singing a lullaby to Baby Friday. And underpinning it all is Terry Rodman on drums and exotic percussion, making his second appearance for me.

For hardcore listeners, this album was surprisingly tame, which would have made sense if produced and released in a year or so. For everybody else, this may be the most accessible of my albums and is certainly the best-produced.

Finally, I must give props to Ace Photographer Peter Michael Sullivan, who scouted locations with me and came up with the striking photo booklet of rotting train tracks, using one of those old cameras with the giant negatives and the little hood you crouch under.

This upload features a few demo recordings to which Terry Rodman played along with in the studio, plus others that were abandoned for lack of funds or other reasons.
