The Mail Music Network, Cassette Culture, The Cassette Underground, or even “Alternative Music”… whatever you called it, there was a thriving, vibrant music underground in the mid 1980s. Though I had been making primitive music cassettes in various configurations since the early 70’s, I was totally shocked to discover - just as I began making albums on my new Teac reel-to-reel 4-track - that there were hundreds or even thousands of others doing the same.

A lot of what drove the early network were the indie publications, among them OP, Sound Choice, OPtion, and Factsheet Five, all of which had cassette review sections (and this is besides the many handmade zines devoted to underground music!)

My very first cassette to be reviewed was Please Do Not Exit Through Playland, though that was the 6th album I’d made on the 4-track. The review was okay-ish, but it was up to me to scour other reviews and offer to trade with those artists. Perhaps spooked by the OPtion review, I was afraid to send out any single one of my tapes and instead cut together this Best-of collection, along with a 6-page booklet tracing the genesis of each song.

My plan had the desired effect, as I wound up with MANY musician friends who wanted to hear more of my music and send their own albums for my appraisal. This is the main reason I am listing this tape on Bandcamp, as it was an important part of my catalogue at the time. Also, being digitized from a pristine normal bias cassette, many of these tracks sound better than the fading 1/4” masters used elsewhere for my Bandcamp uploads .

Finally, I have to tip my hat to Lindee, whom I briefly dated and who burst out laughing upon seeing the tape… like, The BEST of… DINO DIMURO?! How freakin’ PRESUMPTUOUS!

And of course… she was right!
