about

SNOUTBURGER is held with a lot of affection for many listeners, though not everyone likes the same things.

Don Campau wrote a review where he stated the “concept” wasn’t needed, and the album should have been songs-only. Musician John Gibson swears by the side one “concept” side over the songs side. Others come down the middle.

What is undeniable is that SNOUTBURGER continues the themes and instrumentation begun in DIMURO HOUSE: the new Korg digital / analogue synth is again prominent, and drummer Eric Scott makes his second appearance. Acoustic guitars anchor many of the songs, with welcome interludes of Hard Rock.

When released on cassette, Side One was listed only as the “Snoutburger Suite” with no song titles. For this digital upload, obvious working titles have been affixed.

Fortuitously, in 2005 I found a tape of pre-mastered songs that were used to build the side one suite. These have withstood the ravages of time much better than the actual album master, which was used mostly for side two with some judicious EQ. Only one addition has been made to the original running order: an unused synth coda which separates the original side break. The original "Side Two" songs were remastered in 2023 from a pristine chrome cassette.

The cover image of an actual Snoutburger by Suzanne Larson has been long admired and has perhaps added to the popularity of this tape.

Regarding the songs…

Both CHRIS and CLIVE are real songs about guys with those real names.

THE VOICE OF MODERATION was my way of describing the often cutting criticisms of my best friend.

MR. TOAD was an attempt to write an alternate version of the Disneyland Main Street Electrical Parade Theme. It begins with a copious amount of overdubbing, but halfway through exhaustion set in; it lumbers to a close with just a couple basic tracks.

MAYBE WE SHOULD FALL IN LOVE NOW first appeared on the album I produced for Poindexter Holloway; this version is more radio-friendly than his (to put it mildly!)

Finally, VIEW-MASTER is one the most popular songs in my catalogue. Though I didn’t note this on the cassette, the music was inspired by a jam with John Gibson in the group BERTH, for which he provided a couple of the melodies.
