about

After finally releasing my studio recorded CD TRAIN GOING NOWHERE, I was working on two different projects: the home-studio HIGHWAY PATROLLED BY AIRCRAFT, and the computer-based SONGS OF THE MIDDLE AGES, which I was recording at Soundelux, my sound effects studio.

In February 2003 my wife Julie and daughter Elizabeth were in a car accident. Elizabeth walked away, but Julie never regained consciousness and died the following year. Of course I immediately stopped work on both projects. Don Campau released MIDDLE AGES as UNFINISHED, and the tracks for HIGHWAY were put into storage.

After Julie died, I upgraded my home studio for computer recording. I began a project totally dedicated to Julie called SLEEPING BEAUTY. However, a whole album like that was too sad even for me to handle, so I took tracks from both projects and called it SLEEPING HIGHWAY, a perfect and fortuitous title.

When this CD was released, with pictures of Julie on the front and back, a frequent comment was that it was “too sad.” What’s ironic is that Julie heard many of these tracks in progress, and in fact was surprised that they hadn’t been released yet. She thought “What R U Doing In My Life” was very funny, and said: “That’s a great tribute to ME!”

This album contains a couple nice collaborations. John Gibson plays some beautiful piano on “Morley Street @ Dusk.” Tony Lamberti, now a famed Hollywood mixer, provided digital drums for “Fuzzy Grandpa” (which also features John Gibson on lead guitar.) Chris Assells walked into my studio and literally threw off a solo during “The Lady of the House” and didn’t even know I’d hit record.

Overall the production on this album is a bit spare, without many guitar effects or complex arrangements, which perhaps reflects the circumstances it was made in.

For the first time I have included a demo from the original SLEEPING BEAUTY: Missing You Now, written by Don Campau. Also included is TERRI SCHIAVO, a formerly hidden track that was recorded while Julie was still on life support and captures exactly how I was feeling.
