From the first moment I knew what a tape recorder was, I had to own one. And when I discovered that some recorders allowed you to record yourself four or more times, I became a sleepless wraith, walking the earth waiting and hoping that such a machine would come to me.

In the meantime, from the years 1976 to 1983, I was able to borrow or use several machines belonging to friends and co-workers. My film teacher Hugh McKay had a Teac in his classroom; Jay Wertz, my boss, had a cheaper Dokorder in his apartment; and finally, my friend Paul Bacca had a solid stereo cassette deck and a two-track reel to reel machine with which I could bounce tracks. At home, I learned to jerry-rig two cassette decks by recording two or three tracks through open speakers.

Most of what I did in those years does not hold up, but I recall some of those tracks with great affection, and have tried to create a reasonable listening experience from the best of these recordings.
