about

1987 dawned with gleaming new equipment at Gower street: A new digital synth and a state-of-the-art drum machine, both by Kawai. But what began as a full-length concept album was cut short by two earthquakes in October of 1987, one of which severely hurt my back, and the utter collapse of my sciatic nerve on New Years morning, 1988.

Instead of continuing to finish this album, I decided to release what I had as short cassette so I could concentrate on healing my back. When I did resume recording, it was on the highly experimental I HAVE A PURPOSE, which itself was difficult to finish without borrowed tracks from my "vault."

Though keyboard and drum machine heavy, the songs here are better than I remembered. My brother was a high school football star, which is why I had lots of location tapes from his games. "When The Quality Drops" is a pretty direct ripoff of Brian Eno's "Backwater." The piano solo at the end of "Howard's Deli" was inspired by David Bowie's "Alladin Sane." Gentle Giant may have to be credited for the feel of "Mr. Wright."

Because this is such a short album, I have added an era-specific outtake called Theme From MONSTER, which was to be the title music to a horror movie I was planning to make with Eric Scott. However, no John Carpenter royalties for me! This is followed by a Gentle Giant-influenced vocal take of Mr. Wright.
