Through the aisles of the Halloween Superstore we waltzed Through the aisles of the Halloween Superstore we Picked up severed hearts Ran past snapping rats kissed in front of the tombstones Laid in bloody grass At the Halloween superstore We drank a heaping goblet of puss Oh baby baby baby I love you so much Oh Frankie, Frankie leave me alone They sent the Phantom to distract the children as Mrs Sheridan lay there with her exposed leg bone

The Man who gave you the buzzer Is really your second cousin - the man who gave you your destination file Is your brother The man who brought you the papers Is a commodities trader And he knows so much more than you think and So much less what he speaks The woman who gave you her number wears bikinis in the summer and though she'd be creeped out if you saw her if you saw her you would like it you'd even buy it if she published herself But if you're lucky, she will tease you and on and on and on she'll lead you and a tease for a married guy is almost as good It will do you some good it will do you some good in the long run

about

With DINO’S 50, there were a LOT of concepts at play.

First: 50 songs, to celebrate my 50th birthday (though it came out three years late!)

A double album, 25 tracks on each disc. Always wanted to make a double album!

Having recently collated about 30 demos for PLAYDATE, my collaboration with Don Campau, I loved the raw sound of the demos strung together. I decided to try and record these songs as close to the demos as possible.

I also wanted the guitars to have NO outboard effects; just what I could wring out of the Les Paul and Stratocaster tone controls, and the settings on the amps. Also, the instrumentation would closely ape The Magic Band on Trout Mask Replica: Vocals, Left and Right Guitar, Bass, Drums. No keyboards.

Regarding drums, I would be playing a live drum set for an entire album for the first time. I'm a mediocre drummer at best, but I'm available 24/7 and never complain.

Recording took quite a while, as I moved three times while still in progress. Drums, Bass, and temp guitars were recorded at my home in Canoga Park; the left-channel Strat at a Chatsworth apartment complex; right channel Les Paul and vocals in Culver City. While recording there were three computer or drive crashes that required reloading from digital backups.

Finally, the CDs were packaged in a handsome double-pocket wallet created by Furnace duplication. Only 100 were printed.

How did it turn out?

This album definitely sounds CONSISTENT. I stuck to the dry guitars in all but one or two places, and only snuck in keyboards on one song.

The idea of sticking to the demos was fun, but in hindsight a few of the songs could have been tweaked or improved in the writing process.

My plan for the drums was to do a rough pass in Stereo and then rerecord each individual element for each song, but this immediately proved unworkable. Luckily the drum tracks that had been recorded in one long session turned out to be quite usable with some editing and sweetening.

Responses to this album were surprisingly good, given its weird provenance and hefty stack of tracks.

One lasting benefit of this project was the huge number of songs that were considered for inclusion; many of them have appeared in other projects, including STEDMURO (with Russ Stedman), I DON’T KNOW TOMORROW, and of course DINO’S 56, which is mostly DINO’S 50 outtakes. Even now there are unused tracks that still might be revisited.

NOTE: Because Bandcamp requires high-quality files, I had to track down what was hopefully the final version of each song presented here. I cannot guarantee that these uploads match the released CD 100%.
