about

A REAL PRETTY ROSE is a concept album framed by two women: Cartoonist Lynda Barry (whom I attempted to date, and almost succeeded) and my ex-girlfriend Amy, whose tumultuous rein is fully explored in "The Sickening Suite" on what was originally side two.

Borrowing Don Campau's drummer and partner Greg Grey for the first time, I was able to get a lot closer to the swampy, Beefhearty sound I'd been flirting with for years. The original side one is the "upbeat" side, with odes to Lynda, Nicole Campau, Bronaugh Gibson, Meghan, and Women Wearing Sweaters. (Meghan's Morning is actually an edit of a collaboration that appeared on Don Campau's Piñata Party.)

The Sickening Suite is aflame with righteous heartbreak, so close to the events that Amy actually called me while I was doing vocals. "Are you making fun of me?" The offensively angry tone of "Miscarriage For Lunch" could only come from a younger person.

However, none of these facets stopped ROSE from becoming my most popular cassette since MUTUAL ADMIRATION SOCIETY.

Like the Lynda Barry-style face on the cover that now appears to be sporting acne, my original upload of this once very popular album was full of blemishes. I did the best I could with an old Master that had lost most of its high end, but recently was able to find a pristine chrome cassette that sounds exactly how I remember it sounding on release day in 1986!

(One exception is "Wait For Me Nicole" which is taken from the Gajoob Zine compilation CD, my first appearance on a digital format.)

Suzanne Larson created the lovely backdrop of Roses over which I placed my drawn tribute to Ms. Barry.

Era-specific bonus track is What's The Reason, a collab with Don Campau from his Piñata Party.
